TAX SCAM ALERT

Neighbourhood Watch Alert

Tax Scam

A call was received from a lady from Stewartstown in relation to an email she received apparently from HMRC.gov.uk.  This e-mail stated that HMRC were upgrading their system and had run a review of her tax payments etc and discovered that she had overpaid.  A pro-forma was attached to be filled out with personal information and returned to them by email.  There was an official looking signature at the bottom of the form, apparently signed by an officer of the Senior Management, Revenue and Customs.

The lady contacted the HMRC by telephone and informed them of the email.  They have stated that they did not send it and informed her that if they contacted in relation to tax payments that it would only be by mail.  They advised her to contact the police.

The lady printed off a copy of the email and will be forwarding it to Crime Prevention Officer in Cookstown.

Even though this was reported in another district I thought it prudent to make you aware. If you do receive anything similar to the above please contact the police.
